Yesterday, at Nurture KC’s Annual Event, we unveiled our “Nurturing Safe Sleep: Hospital Certification Program.” Why? In Kansas City, unsafe sleep accounts for 16% of all infant deaths, and 24% of Black infant deaths. These deaths are preventable!

Congrats to Providence Medical Center for earning the first “Nurturing Safe Sleep Champion” status among KC hospitals.

How can our community come together to help Kansas City families who need it most? Nurture KC’s Annual Event is a tangible step to do just that. The event, called “Families First: Expanding our Approach to Wellness,” will take place June 22 from 8:30 a.m. to noon at the Loretto Auditorium, located at 1111 West 39th St. in KC, MO.

The event kicks off with keynote speaker, Pamela Merritt, Executive Director of Medical Students for Choice. Merritt’s career reflects her dedication to expanding access to reproductive healthcare. This weekend Nurture KC was a co-sponsor of the 7th Annual Celebrating Fathers: Strong Family Event! It combined job resources + free suits + family services with FUN for the whole family, including carnival rides, sports, giveaways, live music and free food. Sadly, MO ranks 44th nationally for maternal mortality. Nurture KC took part in a Town Hall by Congressman Emanuel Cleaver II on Combatting Maternal Mortality. Our Executive Director, Tracy Russell, shared how to improve the health of local moms, along with experts from Saint Luke’s Health System, March of Dimes, the Missouri Hospital Association and the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services. Collaboration is key to move the needle and save moms’ lives!
